Wood is obviously not sound absorbing like carpet or vinyl but with the right sound proofing materials it can be. In the commercial world, there are several sound proofing methods used that simply can’t be used in a domestic setting.
The experienced wood flooring fitters at JG Flooring Solihull, Birmingham will use various techniques where possible to reduce the noise of wooden flooring. We will ensure that the hardwood flooring has been acclimatised to the room so it will not expand or shrink which can lead to creaky floors. Badly fitted wooden floors can have all sorts of problems and we believe that with any professional fitted floor 80% is in the preparation.
JG TIP: If your floor has started to creak, we recommend using graphite powder (available from any good DIY store) this can be applied easily to your floor joints and will reduce or eliminate the noise.
Using the correct subfloor that is specifically for sound proofing like acoustic underlay will minimise echoing and excessive noise. This is ideal for bedrooms and any 1st floor rooms. We often fit acoustic underlay in flats and apartments where wooden flooring is used.
Sound insulation can be added between the underlay and hardwood flooring to add a further level of sound proofing. In some cases where noise is a real issue, we have removed the floor boards in the room and place sound insulation in the rafters to reduce the noise even further.
If echoing is a real issue in the room due to the hard surface, adding items like rugs, soft furnishings, curtains and furniture can complete eliminate it.
