Along with the various colours, designs and textures available for solid wood flooring, there is also a consideration to be made for the width of your flooring. Plank width is also an option so in addition to the standard width you also have the option of narrow or wide solid wood flooring.
Knowing which one to choose will often depend on the room it is being fitted in and your budget.
The size of your room matters
This is a major factor when choosing the plank width of your flooring. Varying room widths can make different widths look better. Choosing the wrong plank width can make room look smaller. In smaller rooms, a wide solid wood flooring will make the room look bigger. The wider flooring will focus the eye across each plank and offer a less busy, spacious look. Choosing a lighter wood will also add to the illusion of space in a small room. Wide solid wood flooring can bring out the natural textures and grain of the wood giving a pronounced focal point in the room.
In larger rooms it basically comes down to preference, as wide or narrow planks will both offer an amazing affect in the room. It is worth considering that to create a traditional, authentic look and feel you should opt for narrow boards.
We have also fitted a mix of narrow and wide boards in a room to great effect adding more character to the larger space. The overall finish gave the room a feeling of depth and texture.
Flooring costs
As a rule of thumb, wide solid wood flooring tends to be more expensive than narrow planks. This is due to the fact that less flooring can be cut from the wood to produce each plank meaning there will be more waste which adds to the cost.
On the flip side, wider planks can take less time to fit. So when hiring a professional floor fitter for the job they may charge you less when opting for wide solid wood flooring.
