It’s that time of year where you will be having family and friends around your home and maybe the odd party or 2. Your solid wooden floors will be receiving a lot more traffic during these weeks and with all the drinks flowing comes more spillages.
Wood stains are a real nuisance but they can be distinguished by 2 different colours, white or black. Whites stains are relatively new stains that only effect the top layer of wood, but a black stain means that the wood surface has been penetrated.
Solid wood floor stains
White Stains
This is the discolouring of the wood surface and is generally found on new wooden flooring with a lacquered top layer.
Black Stains
This stain is a little more severe and damaging and can make the wood appear to be burnt. This type of stain means it has penetrated deep into the lower layers of the wood and will require a more professional approach call sand and seal
Removing white stains from solid wood floors
Depending on the severity of the white stain will depend on how easy it is to remove, this is due to how deep the stain has gone into the top finish layers of the wood. We have a few methods that have been tried and tested and these include using mineral oil, mineral spirits or baking soda. With Mineral Oil, you should use a soft cloth to apply a small amount to the affected area and repeat a few times to soak up the stain. Results should be visible in around 24 hours. For deeper stains, we would recommend mineral spirits, follow the same steps as mineral oil and wait 24 hours for it to dry.
Baking soda is also a good option by creating a paste with water. Apply as above and leave to dry over 24 hours.
Removing black stains from solid wood floors
As mentioned above, black stains are far more severe and will require a professional service in order to effectively remove the stain. If you speak to us at JG Flooring we can advise on the best options available.
