Nothing comes close to professionally fitted solid wood flooring. After it is installed, it looks amazing with an amazing shine. Keeping that shine on your solid wood flooring, does take a little care and attention and after time it can dull down.
You know that if you’ve ever had new carpets, house guests will always offer to remove their shoes, but with hardwood flooring, it is expected that they will be easier to clean and more resilient to the constant traffic on it. You wouldn’t be expected to take your shoes off in a shop would you.
Once you have your new floor, it will be the talk of all guests, but you want this same reaction months or years down the line. This requires almost daily maintenance to ensure your investment is protected.
Food and Drink Spills
You can expect, food or drink to be spilled on your floor on a daily basis, so when it does happen, you need to be on it straight away. Ensure you have a dry mop or micro fibre cloth close at hand to deal with these accidents. Spills should never be left to sit on the surface so speed is of the essence here. If left it can seep through the joints and warp the wooden floor.
Expertly placed rugs in areas where spillages are expected is also a good idea and will also add to your decor and help break the floor up a bit.
Daily Maintenance of your solid wood flooring
The main two no no’s for your floor are moisture and grit. One can warp the floor and the other can scratch it. Never use a wet mop on the floor as you will never get all the moisture up, but instead choose a mop with a micro fibre pad on it, or use micro fibre cloths. Ensure you clean the floor in the direction of the grain too. When using a mop, imagine that you are mowing your lawn and you want to keep those stripes.
Remember to remove any grit that builds up on the mop so that it does not drag across the floor, small stones can really scratch the floor.
Shining your floor
After your floor is completely free of dust and dirt you can move onto getting that shine back. Don’t be tempted by the endless cleaning products out there promising all kinds of amazing results, but instead, opt for a cleaning agent that is recommended by the manufacturer of the solid wood flooring. If you ask us when we’re installing or drop us a message, we can recommend the best product for your floor.
If you’re floor is already clean you can buff it by simply spraying a mist of water over the surface and then quickly buffing with the dry fibre mop. Keep with the grain and mop as you spray. Before no time you will have your floor looking amazing again.
