In light of the current situation surrounding Covid -19 and our forced lock down, to fight the boredom, many of us a embarking on DIY projects instead of waiting for a professional floor fitter. Where a lot of us are capable of some minor DIY projects, we are seeing some scary installation projects that have simply gone wrong. This not only causes more stress in these already trying times but also costs you a lot more money for the flooring to be put right.
A wooden flooring project can appear to look fairly straight forward after watching a simple looking you tube video but there are many more aspects that a professional floor fitter will do to create the perfect seamless finish that you want after spending the money on materials.
Badly fitted floors can also have a negative affect on the value of your home as a surveyor will point out any imperfections which will help the buyer negotiate the value down.
Over the years we have seen many failed DIY attempts and have had to either rectify to reduce additional costs or completely rip it up and start again.
Laminate flooring is promoted as a DIY flooring but where it is easy to simply click the flooring together, getting it level, straight and the corners and edges perfectly cut is a job for a professional floor fitter.
Most people think that the easy click together system makes for an easy DIY job in their home before they realise how much planning and prep work goes into a successful floor.
After the DIY attempt was completed, the client was happy with the achievement but soon became aware of the shortcuts and bodges that couldn’t be overcome when laying the floor. Bad planning and inexperience in tackling problems soon became apparent on the finished floor when problems began to arise.
Some of the problems included: Raised joints, ill-fitted joints, bad cuts, exposed edges and a very visible hump in the floor. After spending the best part of £1000 on the project, the client was not happy and thought that it let down the overall look of the otherwise amazing extension.
After calling us out to evaluate the problem we advised several options to help with making the existing floor more acceptable, whilst also offering a complete rip up and refit quote. The obvious choice was to start again as most of the problem existed with the sub-floor itself as it had not been properly prepped.
After a plywood subfloor and water proof membrane were installed to correct the uneven sub floor the laminate flooring was then effortlessly fitted to create the perfect finished wooden floor
