Fitting solid wood flooring and engineered flooring can pretty much be fitted anywhere and at JG Flooring we have fitted in various locations. The most popular method is laying it over floorboards.
If you are thinking about fitting solid wood flooring or engineered wood flooring onto joists then we recommend using a minimum of 20mm thick board. A regular 14mm solid oak floor would not be suitable in this particular installation as this thickness is only ideal for rooms that already have a subfloor.
If you are stuck between whether to choose solid wood flooring or engineered flooring then you need to consider a few things. If you are considering having an underfloor heating system installed or in a room where the humidity varies then we recommend opting for an engineered flooring. Engineered flooring is far more withstanding in rooms where the humidity is changeable due to its construction. If you are installing over flooring joists then fitting solid wood flooring is recommended.
When fitting solid wood flooring to joists JG Flooring would usually use a hidden screw method to fix the boards so now unsightly screws are visible. This means fixing the boards with screw as a 45 degree angle into the sides of the boards.
We do also fix boards using a screw and plug method, where the screw is fixed into the face of the boards and an oak plug is then used to hide the screw head. this process is complete on every joist to ensure a solid, secure floor overall.
